Who is Sarita Rai?

Sarita Rai is a lawyer turned social entrepreneur who started a school to provide free education to the underprivileged kids in Hajipur, Bihar. The living conditions in many parts of Bihar are still so awful that unprivileged families make a living off their children’s earnings, who work in factories, as helpers in homes, restaurants, etc.

“It’s been more than 8 years that I’ve been working with children in the remote areas of Bihar; I want them to make something out of their lives, and education is their best chance to do that. The state is swamped with so many social stigmas that the majority of the women & girls spend their entire lives within the confines of their homes. They aren’t even aware of their basic rights. It was to elevate this pitiful condition that I studied law, but to bring my vision to life, I did not take up the many lucrative jobs and chose to become a social entrepreneur instead.” – Sarita

THE JOURNEY

It was always an uphill task to convince the parents to allow their children to study, said Sarita. But once, a few young girls came up to her and expressed their interest in studying. Gradually, the parents understood what Sarita was trying to achieve and started believing in her; from thereon, it became easier to get the children to study.

Initially, she used to teach them from her home for free. In 2009, after four years of home tutoring, Sarita opened a formal educational institute for underprivileged kids. Finally, in 2014, she registered the institute as ‘Topper Study Point Udaan’ under the Societies Act regulations in a non-profit structure.
